Poor Us. Turns out we have Eco-amnesia!
Think that Americans are losing all their constitutional rights? It might be worse than that. We might be losing our minds as well. According to an article in Grist by Terry Tamminen ("Eco-amnesia costs the US $20 billion a year") "as California stands ready this week to pass a law that would ban the distribution of wasteful single-use plastic bags, the opponents of the bill are certain it will doom consumers because, they insist, it is so hard to remember to bring Read more...
Green Development=Red Light?
Many developers and builders shy away from green development because they worry that it sets up too many red lights that slow the process and add to the cost. Actually, many municipalities around the country are taking the opposite view. Faced with shrinking budgets and rising utility and maintenance costs for city infrastructure, many cities see that advantages of green--i.e. Read more...
Accentuate the Positive; Eliminate the Negative
How's your "green" business growing? Are making an effort to actively include green practices into your daily work and home life? That means not only looking for ways to market yourself as green but also looking for ways to rethink old habits that don't support your new green personality. In his article posted in Environmental Leader (www.environmentalleader.com) Dr. Read more...
Green Light, Red Light
Of course, we know that green building is the right thing to do and green buildings are in fact a better economic investment but unless we turn some sacred cows into hamburger we'll never get past the red light of appraising them. We need a different approach to appraising just as we needed a different view of what buildings do and what we should really be expecting of them.

Nobody's Perfect
It isn't perfect. Not even close. But Microsoft's newly released Hohm program is a good first step toward--if nothing else--heightened consumer awareness of individual home energy use and conservation. Plus, it's kinda fun. Unless you have too many "cutting edge" items in your home like a geothermal ground source heat pump or PV panels or... Read more...
Missed Opportunity?
If you've taken our classes you'll have heard us say more than once that "green" is All-American. What we mean is that if we, as Americans, truly embraced greenness in all its glory we could solve a multitude of problems and truly make America great again. We need to go green because it will make us safer, bring more of our jobs home, give us a more competitive edge, and inspire a whole new generation of innovation. Evan Smith makes a compelling case in his blog posting, "Kickstarting the Green Economy with Building Energy Efficiency Read more...
Whatever It Takes
I have long been an advocate of positive change often regardless of the motivation. For example, I don't care if the concept of Global Climate Change is a scare tactic. If it makes people and companies change their habits for the betterment of the planet, then I say: "Scare away!"

Demand the Box!
If the accurate appraising of green homes is ever going to gain momentum then something needs to be done about the Uniform Residential Appraisal Report (endearingly referred to as "The 10-04"). The 1004 is grossly out-of-date when it comes to what's happening in the building industry, namely around green. Where is the box that requests information on the energy efficiencies of the home, any certifications, other green upgrades? Unfortunately we're stuck with a "2-line joke" that refers to "other." Dave Porter of PorterWorks & Green Valuation in the News
Dave & I attended the NAHB Green Building Conference in Raleigh, NC last week where he was one of the breakout session speakers. It probably comes as no surprise in a conference of green builders, developers, suppliers and others invested in green building that the issues surrounding green valuation would be a hot topic. Before a standing-room-only crowd, Dave presented the issues and challenged the group to rally around major changes in the way green buildings are appraised. Jennifer Goodman, Senior Online Editor of EcoHome Magazine covered the session Read more...
